QUETTA: Governor Balochistan Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi on Wednesday expressed his deep concern over the poor state of education in his province and recommended the government to appoint teachers on merit instead of political basis.
Speaking to journalists at Government Law College after opening the regional office of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Governor Magsi regretted over the declining state of education in Balochistan. According to him, the reason for the educational backwardness of the province was the appointment of teachers on political basis instead of keeping in view the educational credentials of the candidates.
“I wonder why our people keep talking of independence and do not pay attention to education,” he said and recommended that provincial government should take notice of political appointments in the education sector. ” All appointments of teachers should be made via Balochistan Public Service Commission so that competent people manage to get jobs,” he added.
Magsi, a twice-elected former chief minister of Balochistan, also raised his serious concerns over the newly issued Balochistan package, insisting that the use of term “package” offended the people of his province. “Package makes the people feel as if they are being given some charity. What the government has granted Balochistan is in fact the genuine right of the province which has been declined its rights for the past 62 years,” he observed.
He appreciated the recent consensus developed between provinces and the federal government on the issue of the National Finance Commission (NFC) by saying that breakthrough was achieved by both the parities because of doing their homework properly this time.
The governor said the 1973 constitution advocated provision of provincial autonomy to the federating units. Refraining to make any direct comments about nationalists’ decision to reject the Balochistan package, Magsi said it was up to the Baloch nationalists to avail the opportunity offered to them by withdrawing cases registered against them or to reject it.
