QUETTA: Provincial president of the Pakistan People’s Party Senator Lashkari Raisani has said President Asif Ali Zardari would complete his term as the president of the country and the demand of his resignation stems from elements devoid of public mandate.
He expressed these views while speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the electoral campaign of Tahir Mehmood, a brother of former education minister Shafiq Ahmed Khan, for the upcoming by-elections in Quetta.
Shafiq Ahmed Khan of the PPPP was shot dead by the Baloch Liberation United Front outside his home to avenge the killing of three Baloch leaders in Mekran in April this year allegedly by the Frontier Corps (FC) personnel. The ruling PPP has decided to field the slain minister’s brother on the vacant seat of the Balochistan Assembly.
Senator Raisani said demanding resignation from the president was unreasonable give the fact that the President Zardari had secured overwhelming public support during his electoral campaign. Such demands are meant to enervate the democratic process in the country. Therefore, the President would complete his term regardless of the hullabaloo created by the opposition parties, he predicted.
He said some elements did not like the active role of the PPP for bringing genuine democracy in the country and resolving all outstanding issues through peaceful negotiations.
“ The Balochistan package is a milestone in resolving the problems of Balochistan. The province would be brought in the national mainstream and longstanding sense of alienation and deprivation would be eradicated. It is not possible to overcome the mess of the past 62 years in a short period of few years. Our government should be allowed to complete its term to meet the tasks put ahead of us,” he said.
The PPP provincial chief said the international community, mainly the Islamic world, should take notice of a global conspiracy hatched against Pakistan to destabilize it through terrorist activities in the country. “ A weak and unstable Pakistan would also harm the interests of the Islamic world,” he observed.
