QUETTA: The Anti-Polio campaign will start from 18 to 20 January 2010 in provincial capital, during the campaign more then 4.3 million children will be fed Anti-Polio drops, Mumtaz Tareen, the Assistant Director Public Relation Department Quetta and Saif-ullah Khan Jogezai, the Executive District Officer (EDO) Health have said during the press conference in Quetta Press Club.
“10 cases were reported last year all around Balochistan; five in Qilla Abdullah, four in Quetta and Sherani each and one in Khosaar”, they said
Approximately 878 teams have been formed with 1756 volunteers. Quetta is one of the High Risk districts due to flow of population from Afghanistan and Sindh Province which creates problem for a well-organized campaign.
144 special centers will be formed in various entry and exit points of the city, like Airport, Bus stations, Railway Station, they said.
Representatives of UNICEF and WHO also expressed their views during the press conference. They appealed to the parents and religious scholars to cooperate with the volunteers.

Four people target killed in Balochistan

QUETTA: A day after the killing of two Baloch political activists in Khuzdar district in a firing incident allegedly by the security forces on Friday, four more non-Balochs were killed in various cases of target killing in different parts of Balochistan on Saturday in an apparent backlash of Friday’s killings. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) accepted responsibility for the killings. According to the details, unidentified persons opened fire on two Punjabi settlers in Ghoseabad Police area at Satellite Town in the provincial capital. The victims were standing outside on the road when unknown motor cyclists opened fire on them. As a result, one citizen Malik Ifthakar died on the spot after being shot while another person, who was identified as Malik Tahir, received serious injuries. Tahir succumbed to the injuries when he was shifted to Quetta Civil Hospital. Family members and relatives of both the murdered citizens came to the hospital where the dead bodies were handed over to them by the authorities after the completion of necessary legal and medical formalities. In another case of target killing, a Punjabi settler was gunned down in Khuzdar district on Saturday after unknown attackers opened fire on him. Mohammad Iqbal, a resident of Sailkot district in Punjab, was on Umar Farooq Chowk. Having sustained serious injuries in the attack, the victim died in the hospital after succumbing to the injuries. Police in Khuzdar said they had registered a case against unknown people and begun the search for the murderers. However, no progress was made in arresting the perpetrators. The slain citizen was reported to be a resident of Punjab province. His dead body was handed over to the family members by the authorities of Khuzdar civil hospital. Meerak Baloch, a spokesman for the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a shadowy organization that champions the cause of an independent Balochistan, called various newspaper offices and accepted responsibility for the killing of three Punjabis in Quetta and Khuzdar. Another man was killed in Mastung district on Saturday in a similar case of target killing. Police in the area said, one citizen identified as Mohammad Ismail was on his way home after closing his shop when unidentified attackers ambushed and killed him. The immediate cause of the killing in Mastung could not be ascertained. Police in the area said they were hunting for the elements responsible for the killings. Situation in most districts of Balochistan remained tense on Saturday after the killing of two nationalist activists in Khuzdar allegedly by the Frontier Corps (FC) after opening of fire on a political rally of the Baloch Students’ Organization (BSO).

144 sub-inspectors promoted as inspectors in Balochistan Police

QUETTA: Provincial Police Officer Balochistan Syed Javed Bukhari has issued directives of departmental promotion of 144 sub-inspectors to inspector-B16. Officials said that the PPO Balochistan issued the directives on the recommendations of provincial departmental promotion committee comprising the Chairman Additional IG Muhammad Akbar, and the members including RPO Sibi Ghulam Shabbir Sheikh, DIG Special Branch Abdul Ghaffoor Kasi, DIG Headquarters Mirza Farhan Baig and the Secretary Assistant Inspector General Establishment Tahiruddin. The officials who got promotion hail different regions including 28 from Quetta, 10 from Zhob, 03 from Nushki, 19 from Khuzdar, 40 from Sibi, and 05 from Gwadar.
88 unmanned railway crossings in Balochistan: DS Pakistan Railways

QUETTA: Divisional Superintendent Pakistan Railways Quetta Division Maqbool Ahmed Magsi while expressing concern over 88 unmanned railway crossings out of total 121 on railway track passing through Quetta division, said the provincial government had been apprised of the situation which may cause loss of human lives in future. Addressing a press conference here Saturday, he expressed his grievance over Mian Chunnu incident that claimed precious lives of children as saying, the provincial government had been asked several times to release funds for the construction of underpasses and bridges at railway crossings. He said that Quetta division had earned Rs 13.5 million in 2009 which was Rs 6 million in 2008.He noted that 36 locomotives could meet the requirement of PR Quetta division while unavailability of their spare parts added to problems making trains late and causing inconvenience to commuters. All-out efforts are being made to lessen the inconvenience of the people traveling through trains, he said, adding endeavors of PR Quetta division had reduced sabotaging incidents from 31 in 2008 to 16 in 2009. He urged media to play role in making public cognizant of unmanned railway crossings. Work on Chaman-Qandhar (Afghanistan) railway track would be started soon as its feasibility report has been completed, he added.
Demo held against killing of coal miners

QUETTA: All Pakistan Labour Federation and Pakistan Central Mines Labour Federation jointly took out a rally to protest the killing of 18 coal miners and injuring of many others. The rally taken out from Municipal Corporation ground marched on various streets and culminated outside the Quetta Press Club where a protest demonstration was held. Labour leaders Sultan Muhammad Khan, Bakht Nawab Yousufzai, Abdus Sattar, Syed Altaf Hussain Shah, Muhammad Jamil, Rehmatullah Baloch, Shah Ali Bugti and others addressed the demonstration. They alleged that Mines Department and the private contractors were responsible for negligence and not taking protective measures at coalmines. In the recent tragic incidents a number of coalmines had collapsed killing 18 coal miners besides injuring many others. The trade union leaders alleged that hundreds of poor coal miners had been killed in such mishaps during the last few years. But no action was taken against any official or the contractor except a formal inquiry. They urged the authorities for appropriate action against those responsible for negligence and not taking protective measures. They also said that most of coal miners had suffered from different diseases, particularly asthma and TB.
Gas pipeline blown up in Mastung

QUETTA: Some unknown miscreants on night between Friday and Saturday blew up a gas pipeline with explosive material in Mastung Tehsil of Balochistan, suspending the supply of Gas to different areas. Some unidentified terrorists planted explosives alongside of Gas pipeline in Mastung area completely destroying the pipeline. After the explosion, the supply of Gas was suspended to different areas. Police have cordoned off the whole area and started investigation. On the other hand, the repair work on Gas pipeline has still not been started, multiplying the adversities of people, already resisting against intense winter weather in the area. People of the area have demanded Sui Gas authorities to repair exploded Gas pipeline immediately.
General Qadir for judicial probe in Khuzdar firing on rally The Baloch Hal News
QUETTA: PML-N Leader and former Balochistan Governor Lt General (R ) Abdul Qadir Baloch has strongly condemned Khuzdar incident and has demanded that it should be probed by a judge of High Court. He said here Saturday that such elements and factors should be unveiled who are playing with the blood of Baloch people. He said when there is talk of reconciliation such bloody incident are repeated. Earlier Nawab Bugti was compelled when government held talks with him but later he was killed. His death provided strength and fuel to Baloch national realization has no past precedence. Then Turbat tragedy occurred in which Ghulam Muhammad Baloch and his colleagues were mercilessly killed. The reaction showed by Baloch over it is enough. Once again, he added Baloch reaction and extremism was strengthened through Khuzdar incident. He said this should be probed immediately. Because FC is of the view it was not present there. Question is which elements were there who played this dirty game. He said investigation should not be formal rather real facts should be brought in picture and such elements should be unveiled whose foolish and cruel policies were prompting extremism and tough nationalism in Balochistan and Baloch national movement was getting energy.
Wheel jam, shutter down observed in Khuzdar The Baloch Hal News KHUZDAR: A complete shutter down and wheel jam was observed her e Saturday to protest firing on BSO rally, killing and inuring several Baloch political workers. All the small and big business concerned, banks, medical stores, vegetable vendors remained close. Attendance in public and private offices was extremely thin. Political workers burnt tyres in the city and along RCD highway blocking the roads. The call for shutter down and wheel jam issued by BSO was supported by National Party, Balochistan National party, Anjuman Tajiran and civil society. BACK DAY: A black and mourning day was also observed here today as elsewhere in Balochistan. Activists of BNP, BSO wore black bands around their arms. A similar black was would be observed here Sunday.
Baloch Bar boycotts courts

QUETTA: On the appeal of Baloch Bar Association court proceedings were boycotted on Saturday and no lawyer of this association appeared before any court in Quetta, Mastung, Kalat, Khuzdar, Lasbella. Baloch Bar leaders said here today that Khuzdar incident is not a new incident for Baloch people. Such incidents have occurred. Controlling is not possible for government. Baloch would not be cowed down by negative tactics. They said that from firing on peaceful rally it was clear writ of secret agencies existed in Balochistan. Forces were frustrating owing to complete shutter down and wheel jam. After kidnapping like arrest secret agencies were now resorted to target killing of Baloch students. They said so called democratic government has broken all record of previous government.
