QUETTA: Tahir Mehmood, a newly elected member of the Balochistan Assembly (BA) and a younger brother of former education minister Shafiq Ahmed Khan, was sworn in as the new member of the Balochistan Assembly. He was voted with a thumping majority in the by-polls held last month in Quetta on the seat that fell vacant after the killing of his elder brother by the Baloch Liberation United Front (BLUF) reportedly for the reason to avenge the killing of three Baloch leaders in Turbat in April last year.
Mehmood had been supported by the Pakhtunkawa Milli Awami Party, Awami National Party and the Pakistan Muslim League during the by-polls when he defeated Syed Amanullah Shahdezai, a candidate of the Jammat-e-Islami.
Balochistan’s deputy speaker Mathiullah Agha administered oath to the newly elected MPA. He is expected to be inducted as the education minister, a post that has remained vacant since the killing of Shafiq Ahmed Khan.
