BA demands protection to domestic maids
QUETTA: The Balochistan Assembly on Monday passed a joint resolution demanding protection to domestic maids according to labor laws. It said women working in houses should be given economical, social and legal protection according to International Labor Organization’s (ILO)O Convention.
The motion was moved by women members Rahila Durani, Nasrin Rehman Khitran, Dr. Ruqia Saeed Hashmi, Gazala Gola, Shahida Rauf and Husan Bano Rakhshani.
In the resolution, it was said that presently there were 8.52 million maids working in houses in which 65% are women and they were playing a vital role to improve the economical condition of country. Mostly they belong to poor families.
Talking on its admissibility, female MPAs said women work for 12 hours a day but they are deprived from basic rights and refused a reasonable salary package. Home-based workers should be given due rights and should be protected under the given law.
The Balochistan Assembly also unanimously approved Balochistan Local Government Bill, 2002. Provincial minister for Local Government Abdul Khaliq Basher Dhost tabled the Bill.
