Balochs mark “black day” against 1998 nuclear tests

QUETTA: A shutter down strike was observed in major parts of Balochistan on Friday protesting against using Balochistan for nuclear explosion that took place in Chagai hills on May 28, 1998.
The protest call was made by the Baloch National Front and supported by all the Baloch nationalist oganisations.
A partial strike was observed in the provincial capital as business establishments in major part of the city remained closed for the day. Baloch Students Organization (BSO-Azad) held a seminar at the University of Balochistan condemning the atomic blast in Balochistan.
Speakers said after the nuclear blast, precautionary measures were not taken in Balochistan causing radiation and risking the lives of the people.
Khuzdar: Complete shutter down was observed in the district. All shops and trading centers even some eating houses remained closed during the day due to which people faced difficulties.
Kalat: Activists of BNF blocked the RCD Highway for three hours in protest against the nuclear explosion in Chagai. Most of the business and commercial establishments remained closed for the day following the shutter down strike call made by BNF.
Mastung: shutter down also affected routine business in Mastung Town. BNF activists wore black armbands to mark the black day. They also displayed black flags on several places as a protest against the nuclear explosion in Balochistan.
Chagai: in Chagai district strike was peace as elsewhere. Shops and eating houses even chemists’ shop also remained closed for the day.
Panjgur: all the shops, banks, bazaars, markets and other commercial establishments remained closed following the strike call made by BNF. The people also wore black ribbon to observe the black day.
Surab: Business activities in Surab came to a grinding halt due to strike, all the shops were closed for all day. The workers of Baloch Students Organization (BSO-Azad) wore black armbands and marched various Roads to look after the strike.
Gwadar: Complete shutter down strike was observed and activists of BNF wore black armbands to mark the black day. Business activities were closed till 6:00 pm after that some shops were opened.
Naushki, Nal, Lasbela, Hub Town, Turbat, Tump, Mand, Pasni, Jiwanri, Kharan, and Besima, where business activities came to a complete halt and all the shopping and trade centers remained closed for the day. People wore black ribbons to mark the black day.

Pakistan celebrates the nuclear tests while Baloch mourn and observe black day throughout: obviously two worlds apart. What is considered by Pakistanis as their symbol of pride is considered by Baloch a rape of their land.
