Polio-eradication campaign to commence on May 24

QUETTA: A three-day  anti-polio drive will commence from May 24, 2010 in Quetta in collaboration with Health Department of Balochistan, WHO, UNICEF and Rotary Club. Around 878 teams have been formed for this purpose.

Address a news conference at Press Club Quetta here on Friday, head of the IPI, Dr. Mohammad Ayub and representatives of UNICEF and WHO said about 108 centers have been established in 53 entry and exit points of the city, like Bus Stop, Railway Station and bordering area of the city

Ayub Kakar said that during the campaign 478226 children below the age of five years will be administered anti polio vaccine.

Responding to a question he He said so far, seven polio cases have been reported in three districts of Balochistan during the current year. The affected districts were included Quetta, Killa Abdullah and Chagai.

He appealed to the parents to administer polio drops to their children for the campaign’s success, started for the complete eradication of poliovirus. He said community leaders, media persons, religious scholars, health workers and teachers also have an important role to play in this regard for educating parents.
