Quetta observes shutter down against Karachi killings

QUETTA: A complete shutter down strike was observed in Quetta city on Friday in response to a strike call given by Pashtoonkwa Milli Awami Party (PMAP) against the target killings of Phastoons in Karachi.

The commercial establishment, shopping and trading centers situated on Jinnah Road, Liquat Bazar, Prince Road, Joint Road, Brewery Road, Abdul Sattar Road, Kandari Bazar, Sariab Road, Golimar Chawk remained closed entire day. Even the bakeries, medical stores and some eating houses were closed for the day. Most of the streets and roads wore a deserted look with very thin traffic. The strike call also enjoyed the support of business community who voluntarily closed down their shops.

Frontier Corps (FC) personnel and other law enforcement agencies carried out patrolling in the city to maintain law and order and to thwart any untoward incident.

The strike call was supported by the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and the Awami National Party, Anjuman-e-Tajran Balochistan.

Meanwhile PMAP took out a protest rally in Kuchlak town condemning the incident of target killings. The protestors marched various parts of the area and chanted slogans against the government functionaries for their failure to maintain law and order in Karachi.

According to press release issued here, Spokesman of PMAP alleged that Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was behind the killing of 20 innocent Pashtoons in Karachi on May 29, 2010. He demanded for transparent investigation in to the incident. In the statement he also criticized the independent judiciary for not taking action against the responsible of blood shed of May 12, 2007 in Karachi and recent spree of target killings in the same city.
