Baloch scholar Jan M. Dashti returns to Balochistan
QUETTA: Renowned Baloch intellectual Jan Mohammad Dashti has returned to Balochistan after successful medical treatment in London following a severe attempt on his life last year in Quetta.
Sources close to the leading Baloch scholar told The Baloch Hal that Jan Mohammad Dashti had come back to his native Dasht area in Turbat District after completely recovering from his injuries. Dasthti, who was the editor-in-chief of Quetta-based popular Baloch newspaper, Daily Asaap, and the provincial secretary at the department of Mines and Minerals, was gunned in Quetta city by unidentified assailants. Though the Baloch scholar survived the attempt on his life, he remained badly injured in the assault. He had to leave the country and seek medical treatment in London.
Dashti’s absence from the journalistic scene of Balochistan was desperately felt as Daily Asaap had to forcefully shut down after the security forces besieged its offices in Quetta last August. Baloch circles have widely welcomed the brave decision of Jan Mohammad Dashti to return to his native Balochistan and hoped that he would resume the publication of Daily Asaap soon after his return as the Baloch people have remarkably felt the absence of a genuine print newspaper for the Baloch people.
Holding a Master’s Degree in journalism from Karachi University, Dashti is the author of two popular books on Baloch culture and history i.e. Essays on Baloch Baloch Nationalism and Baloch Cultural Heritage.
