Balochistan journalist Awarded Humphrey Fellowship 2010-11

QUETTA: Quetta-based Journalist Malik Siraj Akbar has been awarded by the US Department of State (Bureau of Culture and Education) Hubert Humphrey Fellowship for the year 2010-11, making him the first journalist from Balochistan to receive the coveted professional fellowship.
The Humphrey Program is a Fulbright exchange activity. Its primary funding is provided by the U.S. Congress through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. Co-sponsors include other governmental agencies, multinational organizations, and private donors. The Institute of International Education (IIE) assists the U.S. Department of State in administering the Humphrey Fellowship Program.
Malik Siraj, who is the editor of The Baloch Hal, an online English newspaper and the Chief Reporter of Quetta-based English daily The Balochistan Express, besides being the former Balochistan Bureau Chief of Daily Times, is the first journalist from Balochistan to be granted the Humphrey Fellowship which is provided to mid-career professionals. As a part of the fellowship, he would be attached with Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, at Arizona State University. During the fellowship period, he will also be working with the US media.
Malik had previously been awarded South Asia Foundation (SAF) Media Scholarship in 2005 which took him to the Asian College of Journalism (ACJ) in India.
Malik comes from Panjgur, a western district of Balochistan.

Heartfelt congratulations, dear MSA. You deserve it, and it is timely though we will miss your contributions for the Baloch Hal. I sincerely hope The Baloch Hal will get its share of my write-ups even during the fellowship days. The only difference, I must admit, is I will not have the advantage of being present in the ground (Balochistan) while writing on different issues.
