QUETTA: Central Secretary General of the Balochistan National Party (BNP) and former senator Habib Jalib Baloch was gunned down on Wednesday morning in Quetta city.

The Moscow-educated Jalib was a prominent Baloch intellectual and a former chairman of the Baloch Students Organization (BSO)

Jalib, a senior Supreme Court lawyer and the author a several research papers on Baloch nationalism, was sitting at his brother’s shop on Musa Colony of Sariab Road when unidentified persons riding a motorbike opened fire at him. Jalib was rushed to Quetta’ Civil Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A large number of BNP activists, members of different nationalist parties and lawyers’ community rushed to the hospital soon after hearing the news. Enraged sympathizers of the Baloch leader wanted to take his body in front of the Governor’s House to protest against the killing. The police, however, did not allow them to get closer to the Governor’s House at Zargoon Road.

While the BNP has announced 40 days of mourning, the Chief Minister of Balochistan Nawab Mohammad Aslam Raisani has  ordered a judicial probe into the high-profile case of target killing of a prominent nationalist leader. The judicial investigation would be headed by a judge of the Balochistan High Court.

Jalib’s killing has been widely condemned by people hailing from diverse sections of the society.

i am a punjabi but the ones who know me personally, they understand i am probably a bigger balochi than being what i have been born as. i am totally and terribly disgusted on the killing of a small man but with a towering personality. he was a great baloch leader and firmly believed in progressive views. his ailment did not take away his personality’s strength. god knows, i cried and had tears in my eyes – and i am near 40 – when i heard about it. he and his life deserved better and this is totally unacceptable and i do not have words and enough anger to condemn the act.

he was a friend also. a dear friend and his end should have been far/far better than this. he did not deserve this. my heart is bleeing, honestly, with all my baloch brothers and sisters.

i know it is very easy for me to preach patience and rationality from the safe haven of my workplace but i beg that the emotions should not take away the better side of my baloch kins. i beg.

    habib jalib baloch zinda baad.

No doubt that this is a disgusting thing happened today. We still haven’t forgotten the killings of innocent Education Minister Mr. Shafqat and renowned personality Fazal Bari with many others who got killed from time to time. I am equally dismal for the today’s killing but wonder as why no one did strike like these for Mr. Bari and others…..I urge all people of Balochistan to be united and supportive of one another. United you will prosper while divided you are nowhere but darkness and hell.

I’m totally shocked. Habib Jalib was a great leader and a close personal friend of mine. Baloch Nation lost a great son of soil. This is irreparable loss and a big blow to Baloch BNP and Baloch cause. After killing of Nawab Bugti, this is another top killing. As a great leader, organizer, mass mobilizer and a speaker, he will terribly be missed.

Ah! Habib Jalib, You are not dead but alive in our heart and minds. You did your part and defended the motherland in your entire life. You paid the debt of motherland. We love you and salute you.

    With tearful eyes,

    Dr. Wahid Baloch

In him the Baloch have lost a brave, well-read and far-sighted leader. This will create another vacuum waiting to be filled by the lesser mortals; something the community cannot possibly afford at this critical juncture. This is a dangerous development. One that will go a long way to determine the future of this province.
