QUETTA: Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Ghulam Shabir Sheik revealed on Wednesday that the slain BNP secretary general Habib Jalib had declined an official offer to keep security guards in order to stay safe due to his “overconfidence”.

Talking to the media, the city police chief said Jalib had been offered official security but he had declined such offers by saying that he had his own security due to which he did not need more official security from the government.

“He was an active politician who used to interact with the people very regularly. He was confident that he would not be targeted because he was working for the welfare of the people. He was overconfident that he enjoyed people’s support,” said the CCPO.

He said the police would initiate probe into the killing soon after the burial because the family members and party friends were busy in preparing for the burial. The involvement of political opponents in the top political assassination could not be ruled out.

“He was a leader who used to bring out in the streets. He had the street power. Therefore, a lot of people have come out of their homes to protest against his killing. The police have controlled the situation,” he added.

Shiek said four teams had been constituted to investigate the killing of the Baloch leader. Qazi Abdul Wahid, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations, would head the probing teams in order to look into the matter.
